Google To Discontinue Android Instant Apps By End ...

Google has confirmed it will discontinue Android Instant Apps by December 2025, a move that’s unlikely to impact most users due to the feature’s limited adoption. Instant Apps allowed users to try out parts of mobile apps without installing them, offering a faster and more lightweight experience.

Launched in 2016 and rolled out in 2017, Android Instant Apps aimed to reduce friction for users engaging with digital services. When a user clicked on a compatible link, the Google Play Store would load a lightweight, temporary version of the app — under 15MB — allowing immediate interaction without taking up much space or time. This was especially useful for services like news readers, media platforms, and e-commerce apps, with early adopters including Vimeo, Wish, and Ilta-Sanomat, a Finnish newspaper.

Despite its practical benefits, the feature saw minimal developer support. One major limitation was the requirement to create a separate “instant-enabled” version of the app that met strict size and dependency constraints. Trimming apps down to 15MB proved to be a technical challenge, especially for those built with complex libraries. This complexity ultimately deterred widespread adoption.

The decision to shut down Instant Apps was first spotted by a developer using the canary version of Android Studio, where a tooltip indicated that support for Google Play Instant will end in December 2025, along with removal of related APIs and development tools in the Android Studio Otter Feature Drop. Android Authority has confirmed the presence of this message, although Google’s official documentation has yet to be updated.

Given its low visibility and limited use, the removal of Android Instant Apps is expected to have little impact on the average user. While it once showed promise as a bridge between app and web experiences, the lack of developer engagement made it a low-priority feature in Google’s evolving mobile ecosystem.

As Google continues to streamline its development tools and platforms, the retirement of Instant Apps reflects a shift toward more practical and widely adopted technologies, especially in an environment where full app installations remain the standard user preference.
